A NEW ERA
Lifford-Strabane project short-listed for EU FundingBy Chris AshmoreA multi-million euro project could transform Lifford and Strabane into one of the most attractive cross-border urban areas in Europe.A budget of up to €8 million could be available under a special EU backed programme for public places if it gets the green light. The project is one of 20 short listed from all over Europe out of 126 submissions, but only six to eight will be chosen to share a budget of €50 million.Plans are now at an advanced stage to transform the area around the River Foyle that divides the two towns. The proposals include the construction of a modern “highly designed boulevard” linking the two towns while the whole river area will be lit up with bright, imaginative lighting.According to Francie Coyle, Director of Planning and Economic Development with Donegal Co. Council, the project aims to “reconcile the communities of Lifford and Strabane by creating an iconic pedestrian and cycleway bridge between the towns.”And, he added, it will be linked “with an arched leafed walkway and leading to a highly decorative promenade area along the Lifford riverbank.”In a document circulated to councillors this week, he stated: “The Lifford bridge and Lifford-Strabane road, previously a flashpoint area for bombs, riots and closures, will be transformed into a highly designed ‘boulevard’ linking the two towns, with pockets of shared spaced where both communities can meet and socialise.”He continued: “The dark and unappreciated border riverside area will become transformed into a river of lights with boat launching areas, public art and suspended viewing areas.”A decision on whether the project will get funding should be known by the end of the year.
