GOAL FAMINE
Finn Harps have hit a massive goal famine – they have not scored in 696 minutes of league and cup football.
In their last six league games Harps have failed to find the net.
And on Monday night it was the same only story as they made their exit from the League Cup, going down 3-0 to arch-rivals Derry City at the Brandywell.
Harps’ last goal game on Friday, March 21st when they beat UCD 1-0 with Shaun Williams on target.
Speaking after the Derry defeat, assistant manager Marty McCann described the performance as “unacceptable.”
“We have to dust down and get on with it,” he added.
Harps have gone from third in the table to 11th in recent weeks.
And they are now firmly in the relegation zone and appear to be in real bother.
Next up is a crunch six-pointer away to bottom club Galway United at Terryland Park this Friday (kick-off 7.45).
McCann stresses that this is a “must win” game but knows that Galway will be going into the game with real hope that they can finally kick-start their season.
Last Friday Galway picked up a morale boosting point as they held Derry City to a scoreless draw away from home.
Galway have yet to win in nine league games but the appointment of former Republic of Irleand and Blackburn player Jeff Kenna as manager already seems to have given the club a shot in the arm. If they beat Harps they will be just a point behind the Donegal club.
With three teams going down at the end of the season, McCann knows that Harps quite simply must stop the rot ang get at least a point.
On a brighter note, there is a possibbility that Gary Beckett could finally be ready to make his first appearance while Stephen Parkhouse should be back form injury to boost the attack.
