Gold rush

July 23rd, 2009

Finn Valley AC’s Mark Bonar ran a clever race to take gold in the 1500m at the National Track and Field Championships in Tullamore, Co Offaly, last weekend.

In the final championships of the season, Bonar ran a good tactical race and left himself ideally positioned to challenge for gold. He was content to stay mid bunch until the 1100m point and made his move when he got to the 1100m mark. He broke free along with Letterkenny AC’s Ruairi Finnegan.

With 150m to go, Bonar made his move and powered home to take the gold medal in 4.17. Finnega came in threeseconds behind to take the bronze medal. The win was a boost after he experienced disappointment last week.

There was also medal success in the U19 1500m for Convoy’s Pauric McLaughlin, who continued his good form when he added a bronze to the gold and silver medals he won last week. The Finn Valley athlete completed made it three out of three in bog championships, having won medals at the Schools Cross Country and the Irish Schools Track and Field.
