Making the breakthrough

Sean MacCumhaills have launched a serious challenge to Donegal’s Big Two in the senior hurling championship by beating the current champions Setanta and booking a place against Burt in next weekend’s final.
The club took out the first of the county’s traditional hurling powerhouses when they defeated Setanta by four points in Burt on Sunday. Don Browne’s team has now made it to the county final for the first time since 1998.
“We’ve been waiting a long time to get there,” admitted team selector, Paul Brady.
“We’ve been doing well in the underage hurling for the last 10 years but this is the first time that we have made the breakthrough. It’s been 11 years since we were in the final.”
The last time MacCumhaills were in a final they managed just three points against Burt so the team will be anxious to avenge that defeat. The senior team will now hope to emulate the club’s minor and junior teams, who have already won county championships.
