MacCumhaill’s bid to make history

September 10th, 2009

Don’t underestimate us – that’s the cry from the MacCumhaill’s camp as they bid to capture the Donegal Senior Hurling Championship title for the first time on Sunday.

In their last meeting with the Inishowen side, they were beaten by four points.

But MacCumhaill’s are relishing the prospect of appearing in the final, and possibly making history.

According to Peter Maloney, one of the driving forces behind the rejuvenation of hurling at MacCumhaill’s, reaching the final should not come as a major surprise.

“We’ve been knocking at the door for the last couple of years,” he said, adding that at the start of the year going for the title was always the aim.

MacCumhaill’s have a sqaud of 32 and although their Ulster league campaign went poorly, the team appears to be peaking at the right time.

He knows that Burt – who have such a great tradition – will be favourites and very difficult to beat, but MacCumhaill’s won’t lack battling qualities.

And he revealed that MacCumhaill’s have been working on their mental strength as well as fitness and general training and skills.

“We need to be able to respond if we go behind and be able to deal with it. We know that Burt will score, we have to have the mental strength to carry on,” he said.

MacCumhaill’s will delay the naming of their side until closer to Sunday as they have a number of players on the doubtful list, mainly due to ‘flu.
